The caterers and their hashgachos were relying on the party planner and her affirmation that the products were Kehilla Kosher-certified. Hillel chapters on campus are administered by rabbis or lay people. Most Hillel directors are not Orthodox and in many Hillels they are responsible for the kashrus. Another issue has recently reached KASHRUS. Many small towns do not have an Orthodox shul. The non-Orthodox rabbi is responsible for kosher in that town. We have discovered that many of those serving as rabbis are Reform, transdenominational, Neo-Hasidic, etc. Travelers beware! |

OU Releases Internal Memorandum On Raisins - February 19, 2009
OU Raisin Memorandum
DATE: February 2, 2009 TO: OU Kashrus Staff FROM: Rabbi D. Bistricer RE: Raisins
CC: Rabbis Genack, Elefant, and Dr. Katz
Approximatelytwo weeks ago, kashrus concerns regarding tolaim in raisins were raised by a number of hashgachos. In response, the OU issued a thorough investigation into the matter, which concluded last week. The OU’s thorough review of this issue entailed the following: 1) Examination of pest control programs at several OU certified CA raisin plants by local OU mashgichim. 2) Consultation with two USDA entomologists. 3) Inspection of many OU certified containers of raisins, which were not limited to any particular brand or expiration date, by two experienced OU mashgichim in Lakewood, NJ. 4) Consultation with OU poskim. The findings of the review revealed that the existence of larvae or other insects in raisins are rather infrequent, assuming that raisins are stored under proper conditions (cool, dry, clean environments), which is typically the case. If the probability or prevalence of insect infestation in any food is determined to be insignificant, there is no halachic obligation to check raisins before consumption. Prior to issuing its statement, the OU was also in contact with other hashgachos, whose findings and statistics were very similar. Furthermore, Rav Belsky pointed out that since the infestation discovered by all hashgachos was limited to larvae, which were noticed only after soaking raisins for a few hours, there were additional grounds to be lenient. The presence of larvae in raisins likely occurs in storage or when the grapes are already off the vine. The Taz writes that under these circumstances checking for insects is not required, and explicitly mentions raisins as an example (See Taz Y.D. 84:12). Subsequent to our investigation, a statement was issued on January 29th that raisins may be consumed without checking beforehand, provided that they were stored under proper sanitary conditions. Raisins may be assumed to have been stored properly unless there are obvious signs that would indicate otherwise (mold, webbing, insect damage, broken container, etc).

Shechita Under Attack In UK - Your Help Is Needed - February 08, 2009
A major challenge to shechita no in UK. Write today to David Taylor MP, Houses of Parliament, London, England SW1A 0AA saying that you respectfully request Mr. Taylor to withdraw his Early Day Motion which calls for the repeal of the exemption from stunning for religious slaughter methods and the compulsory stunning of animals post-cut until the exemption is removed. The Jewish community in the UK and the all over the world with great concern. Amending the WASK 1995 Regulations with regards to religious slaughter in this manner interferes with the fundamental freedom of a religious community to define its own religious laws and helps anti-semites across the world to find support for their anti-Jewish agenda.
When writing to Mr. Taylor, please send copies of all correspondence (sent and received) to Kashrus Magazine, POB 204, Brooklyn, NY 11204.

Chicago Rabbinical Council Explains Raisin Issue - February 06, 2009
Today, February 6, the Chicago Rabbinical Council, whose Kashrus Administrator, Rabbi Scholem Fishbane, is also the Executive Director of AKO (Association of Kashrus Organizations) which has studied this problem in depth gave out the following statement. Recently, someone discovered drosophila larvae in raisins and brought it to the attention of the kashrus world. These larvae are not visible when one visually inspects raisins, but can be seen in water that had been used to soak raisins. In the ensuing weeks, kashrus professionals from the cRc and other hashgachos have been investigating this claim, and the following are our findings: There are, in fact, a limited number of drosophila larvae in some boxes of raisins, but it is unclear whether they are common enough to raise a Halachik concern. Although the Torah forbids us from eating bugs, one is only required to inspect a vegetable if there is a reasonable concern that it might be infested. It is unclear whether the infestation level found in raisins exceeds this threshold, which is halachically referred to as miut hamatzui. [Although there was a high infestation levels first reported in raisins, it has since been found to be a much lower number]. Furthermore, it is unclear whether bugs which are as difficult to find and identify as drosophila larvae, are in fact included in the class of forbidden bugs. USDA personnel have confirmed that drosophila larvae hatch after the grapes/raisins are detached from the ground, and do not leave the raisin where they were hatched until after they have left the larvae stage. In cases such as this – where the bug hatched on a fruit which isn’t attached to the ground and the bug never left that fruit – all Halachik authorities agree that one may consume the bug (see Shulchan Aruch YD 84:4). At first, one expert suggested that drosophila larvae may hatch while the grape is attached to the ground, which caused hesitation amongst the Kashrus professionals, but after conferring with her colleagues and clarifying which bug we were referring to, she retracted her statement. In truth, even if there was a possibility that the larvae hatched while the grapes were attached to the ground, there would be basis for permitting the raisins based on Taz YD 84:12. We [Chicago Rabbinical Council] therefore conclude that the recent report of bug infestation of raisins does not concern kosher consumers, and raisins may be eaten. [Of course, raisins showing visible signs of infestation by bugs other than the ones discussed above should not be eaten until the bugs are removed]. The cRc will continue to monitor for any new developments

Raisin Updates - What The Kashrus Agencies Are Saying - February 05, 2009
The new raisin problem is featured in a 10 page section of the March issue of KASHRUS Magazine. To order a copy @ $6 call 718-336-8544. It is on sale in Hebrew bookstores, select groceries, and newsstands @ $3.75. Check www.kashrusmagazine.com for regular updates.
Insect infestation has been noted in varying degrees from a wide variety of sources worldwide. Gefen brand Raisins (certified by the Volover Rav) and Mishpacha brand Raisins (certified by the Nirbater Rav) were recalled by their rabbonim hamachshirim. Kashrus agencies and insect specialists are investigating and interim reports are being issued as the investigation continues. As of this date in February, these are the opinions of some leading kashrus agencies. See partial statements below. Contact the agencies for their complete statements. All agencies advise consumers and merchants to be careful in the storage of all products including raisins and they are continuing to investigate the degree of infestation in raisins. OU “Following careful investigation, extensive testing and consultation with our halachic authorities, the OU upholds its original position that raisins, when stored under normal conditions (cool, dry and clean environments) do not require checking for the presence of worms or insects. (???? ??"? ??"? ??, ??) CRC The CRC (Hisachdus Harabbonim) issued an "interim" statement (hoiraah zemanis) in Yiddish saying that raisins which are now available are acceptable (b’chezkas kashrus). The CRC promises that starting now mashgichim will inspect all raisins used under their productions. Further investigation is being done. OK “The OK has carefully investigated the matter and, after extensive testing and in consultation with our Rabbonim, the “OK” continues to maintain that raisins, when stored under proper conditions (cool dry and clean environments), do not require checking for bugs.” MK In a reversal of their previous warning (see KASHRUS, March 2009, p. 39) the MK said: “After further research regarding raisin infestation and ongoing discussions with leading experts in the field of kashrus, it has been decided that, at the present time, RAISINS MAY BE USED. We will continue to monitor the situation and advise the consumer regarding any changes” KAJ “Due to bug infestation, no raisins of any brand or hashgocha may be used at the present time, whether eaten plain or used in cooking or baking. Any products that have already been baked or cooked with raisins may be used. “The Rabbinate is aware of the inconvenience involved. In the near future, raisins under our supervision will be checked for infestation and will be indicated as such. We anticipate that other hashgachos will be doing the same. The Rabbinate will notify the public when this has been achieved. “The notice [the two paragraphs above] was not meant for the public. It was meant to be posted in shul for the benefit of our members and our establishments. Someone posted it on the internet without asking us, which made it seem that it was a statement for the public. “Various brands of raisins were checked and found to be infested, including some originating from abroad. Our Rabbinate has spoken to experts in the field who have checked raisins both here and abroad, including samples which we sent them. Pursuant to these investigations and after discussing the matter with other poskim, our Rabbinate decided that the problem is prevalent enough to warrant notifying our membership as well as establishments under our supervision, that they refrain from using raisins until further notice.”
Effective immediately, all open stock of Fannie May Chocolates are no longer under the certification of the cRc. This includes all of the loose products sold in their retail stores. Factory packed products bearing the cRc logo continue to be accepted by the cRc as dairy – Cholov Stam. Campbell’s Vegetarian Vegetable Soup, formerly certified by the “KOAOA” (“Half Moon-K”) is no longer kosher-certified. The company has stopped labeling the soup with their symbol. The following revised kashrus alert is from the Kof-K on January 29, 2009. Bigelow Pomegranate Pizzazz Tea, is is not currently certified as kosher by the Kof-K and does not bear a kosher symbol on the package. This should not be confused with Bigelow Green Tea with Pomegranate, which bears the Kof-K and is indeed certified kosher. RC Bigelow, produces flavored teas which contain kosher dairy ingredients, as well as products that are not KOF-K certified. Be sure to check the label to assure the parve/dairy and kashrus status of the product. The previous alert can be cited with the URL: http://www.kashrut.com/Alerts/?alert=A2605
The following Kashrus alert clarification is from the KAJ on January 29, 2009. "While we stand behind the notice posted on the internet, the notice was not meant for the public. It was meant to be posted in shul for the benifit of our members. Someone posted it on the internet without asking us, which made it seem that it was our intention to publicize it. Various brands of raisins were checked and found to be infested, including some originating from abroad. Our Rabbinate has spoken to experts in the field who have checked raisins here and abroad, including samples we sent them. Pursuant to these investigations and after discussing the matter with other Poskim, our Rabbinate decided that the problem is prevalent enough to warrant notifying our membership, as well as establishments under our supervision, that they refrain from using raisins until further notice. I believe that in the future supervision on the production of raisins will -as a matter of course- include checking for infestation by many kashrus agencies. Strawberry Infestation Update - June 18, 2008
Based on information provided by some leading kashrus experts in the field, currently there are extremely high levels of thrip infestation in fresh strawberries originating from all parts of the continent. Research has shown that many of the common washing systems currently in place are inadequate in ridding the strawberries of the thrips. As a result, a number of kashrus organizations in the USA and Canada have disallowed use of fresh strawberries. Even those continuing to allow their use require superhuman, very time-consuming and cumbersome efforts, making it virtuously impossible for a regular person to guarantee that they have sufficiently cleaned their fresh strawberries. We are not saying that no methods of cleaning work; however, with so many methods being used, how are we to know whether they all work? Housewives will probably find the methods too time consuming, at least and probably confusing as well. Restaurants and caterers using strawberries may now shift to using shaved berries. Consumers will wish to know how strawberries are being prepared at a given establishment. We promise an update as soon as available. |
