SPECIAL REPORTS, EXCLUSIVE TO KASHRUS MAGAZINE "OU" Shmittah Update, Kellogg Update, Soda Alert by KASHRUS Magazine Staff Featured in KASHRUS Magazine's Special Reports section. |
| "OU" Shmittah Update The "OU" does not rely on the standard heter mechirah, whereby the Israeli government sells the entire country to non-Jews in order to remove the restrictions of shmittah. This year, the "OU" is certifying some parsley, coriander, celantra, dill and paparika that was grown during shmittah on the basis of a different method of sale. Each owner of the parcels of land on which the parsley was grown executed a personal sale to a non-Jew. A sum of money was paid for each property. The Israeli government, which controls all land transactions, issued legally-binding authorization for these specific sales. The sale was performed without a middleman, which obviates the concern of shaliach lidvar aveirah. The Tzitz Eliezer (6:32) allows this method of sale, in counterdistinction to the general sale of the entire country. (See also Chazon Ish 10:6.) In addition, all melachos diorayso (work forbidden by the Torah on shmittah) were performed by non-Jews and the majority of the parsley was planted before the onset of the shmittah year. Kellogg Update Kellogg Corn Flakes and Kellogg Honey Crunch Corn Flakes, produced in this country and certified by the the Vaad Harabonim of Massachusetts, are now being produced on dairy equipment in some of the Kellogg plants; packaging now bears "KD."All Kellogg Corn Flake Crumbs and Low Sodium Corn Flakes remain pareve. Kellogg Rice Krispies produced in this country remain pareve. However, Kellogg Rice Krispies produced in Canada bear a "COR-D". This product, although it bears the designation "Not for sale outside Canada," is being sold here. Also, the prominent "OU" in a circle on the back of the Canadian Kellogg Rice Krispies box does not stand for "OU" supervision but rather is French for "or". Soda Alert Inadvertently, the Pepsi Cola Bottling Company of New York produced a small quantity of 2 Liter: Schweppes Dry Grape and Ginger Ale, Canada Dry Seltzer, Orange Seltzer, Ginger Ale, Diet Ginger Ale Cherry 7 UP Sunkist Orange A&W Cream between July 31, 2001 and August 7, 2001 bearing the Kosher for Passover (KP) claim, when in fact these products should have been produced with the year-round Kosher (K) designation. The KP caps are normally discarded immediately after the Passover run and should never have been used. The product in question can be identified by the Kosher for Passover cap and the date code on the shoulder of the bottle bearing the following codes: 08 212 1 08 213 1 08 214 1 08 215 1 08 218 1 08 219 1
